How a Bespoke painting is made

From a blank canvas to your wall in about three weeks. Here is what happens in between.

Two mediums

What we paint with

We only paint in two mediums, so we can do both properly.

Oil on canvas

Built up in layers

  • Primed cotton canvas, stretched over 1.5 in kiln-dried wooden bars
  • Artist-grade oil colors with high pigment load
  • Brush and palette-knife texture you can feel
  • Finished with a protective, non-yellowing varnish

Best for Statement walls, living rooms, anywhere you want depth.

Oil painting, step by step

Six stages at the easel

  1. Prepare the canvas

Cotton canvas is stretched, primed with gesso and sanded smooth.

  2. Sketch and underpaint

The composition is drawn, then blocked in with a thin, warm underpainting.

  3. Build the color

Color goes on in layers, dark to light, over several sessions so each layer can set.

  4. Texture and detail

Palette knife and fine brushes add texture, highlights and the final details.

  5. Dry and varnish

The painting dries for several days, then gets a protective varnish.

  6. Check and approve

A second painter inspects it, we photograph it, and you approve it before it ships.

Watercolor, step by step

Patience, water and light

  1. Stretch the paper

Heavy cotton paper is soaked and taped flat so it stays smooth.

  2. First washes

Big, loose washes set the light and the mood of the whole piece.

  3. Layer and lift

Glazes are layered once each one is dry; highlights are lifted out by hand.

  4. Mat and approve

The painting is matted in acid-free board, photographed and sent to you to approve.

Quality

Checked twice, approved by you

Every painting is inspected by a second painter under daylight lamps: color, edges, varnish, signature and hanging hardware. Then we photograph it and send the photo to you. Nothing ships until you’re happy.
