Framing and hanging

The two-thirds rule

A painting, or a group of paintings, looks best at about two thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Over an 84 in sofa, aim for 54–60 in of art; over a 60 in sideboard, about 40 in.

How high to hang

Hang the centre of the painting at about 57 in (145 cm) from the floor, the height galleries use. Above furniture, leave 8–10 in between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the painting.

Finishes

  • Gallery-wrapped: stretched over 1.5 in deep bars, sides painted, hardware included.
  • Rolled canvas: ships in a tube with a 2 in unpainted border, for your own framer.
  • Floating oak frame: natural oak with a slim shadow gap around the canvas.
  • Watercolor, matted: acid-free mat in a standard frame size.
  • Watercolor, oak frame: matted and framed behind glazing, ready to hang.
